I plan to format my desktop so that I will get a brand new clean WinXP installation (“spring clean up” in advance)
In order to forget nothing, I draw up a list of softwares I often use (I have plenty of apps I’ve used only once)
I think it would be useful to share the list:
Internet:
- Browser: Firefox
- FTP client: FileZillla
- Private network over the net: Hamachi
- Access any file within my laptop from any browser: Avvenu
- Voice over IP: Skype, Gtalk
Multimedia
- Media Player: VLC
- DVD/CD burner: Nero
- DVD Shrink
Protection
- Firewall: Zone Alarm
- Anti virus: Avast
- Anti spyware: PestPatrol, Microsoft AntiSpyware and Ad-Aware
- Back-up: Norton Ghost(just in case)
Misc.
- Archive Manager: Winrar
- Office Suite: OpenOffice
- Torrent: uTorrent
- Text editor (for punctual dev): Ultraedit
[Update] For those who come from Digg or Newsvine, this post was part of a test I ran to compare popularity between both services. Results here.

Just to let you know, your uTorrent site is pointed to ultraedit’s site.
Good selection and choice of apps there. Never used Hamachi, so I may check it out.

If you have Windows XP, why do you use linux?
Basically I dont see any advantages to using linux over windows xp, Im dual booting windows
and ubuntu. Ubuntu is nice and all but I dont see anything that would make me prefer it
over windows. The only thing i have been using ubuntu for is web browsing playing
music/movies (cant play games) which I can do better/hassle free in windows.
So what are the advantages of l using linux over xp?
